Frequently Asked Questions

Discover the Art of Jamawar & Pashmina

From 700-year-old history to our intricate weaving techniques, find answers to everything about our heritage craft.

Jamawar is a 700-year-old art form that originated in Iran and was brought to Kashmir by Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin. The word "Jama" means robe and "War" means yard. Historically, these were purchased by royalty to make magnificent robes. Each shawl features a special floral pattern, often resembling the mango fruit (Kalka), reflecting a rich cultural legacy.

Kani Jamawar is loom-woven using small wooden bobbins called "Tilli" and follows a coded script known as "Talim." It is often called "twill tapestry weave." Sozni Jamawar, on the other hand, is intricate needle embroidery. While both are prestigious, the Sozni technique is often considered more difficult as a single artisan must work on the entire shawl to maintain consistency.

Authentic Jamawar is a labor of intense patience. A single Sozni Jamawar shawl involves millions of stitches and can take 4 to 5 years of dedicated work. Our complex patchwork masterpieces, some containing up to 364 unique pieces, can take 6 to 7 years to complete. This slow process ensures that every piece is a unique "piece of history."

Absolutely. We strictly use "Azo-Free" colors and organic fabrics that are free from harmful pesticides. Furthermore, we have a strict policy against child labor; all our 235+ artisans and craftsmen working in-house are above the age of 25 and are masters of their trade.

Yes. We specialize in Master Pieces, including Antique Jamawars, Sozi Jamawars, and our signature Patchwork Jamawars. We also offer master collection pieces of Indian Sarees (6-meter hand Sozni embroidery) which can be enhanced according to specific design interests for the global market.
